My Great Bacon Adventure

My Great Bacon Adventure

What would you do for bacon? Chances are, you’ve never been asked this question. However, yesterday afternoon I was approached with this exact inquiry. Why would anyone be posed with this question, you ask? As it turns out, Oscar Mayer is running a campaign called Bacon Barter. They’ve equipped a man with a camera crew, a refrigerated truck and 3,000 lbs of bacon to travel cross country and use the power of bacon to barter their way from coast to coast. Sounds fun, right?

The art director here at NowSourcing, the mighty Jon Jackson, enlightened me to the fact that the Bacon Barter was coming through Louisville and was looking to make a deal. They sent out a post asking if anyone was willing to get a bacon tattoo in exchange for bacon, and if you know me you’d know I’m the perfect man for the job. After some messaging back and forth I got a phone call from Josh Sankey, the Bacon Barterer himself, telling me where to meet him. We were in business.

I pulled up to the front of Acme Ink, arguably one of the best tattoo shops in the area, and quickly found Josh and the rest of the Bacon Barter team. After going over formalities and meeting everyone, we got down to business. Josh began at a mere 10 bricks of bacon. For those wondering, 1 brick = 16 slices. Since I was getting a tattoo and going to permanently pay homage to bacon the rest of my life, I felt the need to obtain a little more than 10 bricks. I immediately went for the kill shot and demanded the entire truck load to suffice as payment for the tattoo. Josh quickly informed me this was only the 3rd day of the Bacon Barter, and they needed the bacon to make it all the way to California. Being the good sport that I am, I lowered my bid to 500 bricks. Josh swiftly responded with a low 50. Things were heating up. We went back and forth like this for quite a while. We eventually met a middle ground when I asked for 150 and Josh hit me with 130. I dropped to 140, he dropped to 135. On a whim I decided to ask for a random 137. Sold!

Once the deal was made, I had to hold up my end of the bargain and get marked for life. I went into the tattoo shop and sat down with Derrick Snodgrass, one of the many talented artists at Acme Ink. Jon had designed a little something for me already and the Bacon Barter crew seemed to dig it, so we went with it. About 45 minutes later, I emerged from the shop with this bad boy. Talk about bacon dedication!

The rest of the night continued to be nothing short of brilliant. I offered Josh a place to crash for the night and we stayed up late into the night hanging out and talking. A case and a half of beer and a bottle of moonshine later, we decided it was time to turn in. Josh had decided to come to the NowSourcing office with me the next morning to meet the rest of the crew. We couldn’t wait to surprise the office.

So, this morning Josh and I arose around 8am (shhh, I’m supposed to be at work by then) and headed out on our way to the office. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with questions about the previous night’s events. Everyone was curious about the Bacon Barter and Josh made sure they were filled in on all the goings on. We snapped some pics (see below) and before long it was time for Josh to make his exit.

The rest of the Bacon Barter team met up with Josh outside and we all went down to see him off. Amidst hugs and handshakes, we quickly said our goodbyes and wished them all safe travels to their next destination. I can honestly say, after hanging with Josh last night I feel I made a new friend. Although I was sad to see him go, I’m sure this won’t be the last we see of each other. In the meantime, keep up with Josh and the gang by visiting Baconbarter.com. Maybe, if the price is right, you can barter with him and figure out what YOU would do for some bacon.
